The leadership hiring process: six stages from brief to joining
A leadership hire is not a bigger version of a normal hire. The candidates are fewer, most are not looking, the cost of a wrong choice is far higher, and the process has to protect confidentiality on both sides. Companies that run a leadership hire like a mid level vacancy usually end up with a long search, a thin shortlist or a leader who leaves within two years. This guide sets out the leadership hiring process we follow, stage by stage, from the first brief to the leader settling in.
What counts as leadership hiring?
Leadership hiring covers the roles that set direction and own results: CEO and Managing Director, CXO roles such as CFO, COO, CHRO and CTO, Business Unit and Country Heads, and Functional Heads who lead a large team or a critical function. It also includes niche technical leaders where only a handful of people in the market can do the job.
The leadership hiring process in six stages
1. Understand the hiring mandate
Every search starts with why the role exists now. Is it growth, a replacement, a new market, a turnaround or a succession plan? The answer shapes everything that follows. We hold a working session with the founder, CEO or board to understand the business plan and what this leader must deliver in the first two years.
2. Deep calibration
Next, the brief is turned into a clear profile: the must have experience, the scale of business the candidate has run, the leadership style that will work in this culture, and the deal breakers. Calibration also tests the brief against the market, so that pay, location and expectations are realistic before the search starts.
3. Map the market
Rather than advertising, we identify the companies where suitable leaders work today and map the people in comparable roles. This gives the client a view of the whole market, not just the few people who happen to be looking.
4. Deep dive assessment
Each interested candidate is assessed against the calibrated brief: what they have actually delivered, how they lead, why they would move and whether the move is realistic. Records are checked and references taken before a profile reaches the client.
5. Shortlist
The client sees a short list of assessed, interested and validated leaders. The aim is fewer, stronger interviews, with clear notes on each candidate's strengths and risks.
6. Secure and onboard
The final stage is often where leadership hires are lost. Offers have to be built around the role, counter offers anticipated and the notice period managed. We stay close to the candidate and the client until the leader has joined and settled in.
Common mistakes in leadership hiring
- Starting the search before the business has agreed what the role must deliver
- Writing a brief for the person who left rather than for the next stage of the company
- Relying only on active candidates and job boards
- Running a slow process with long gaps between interview rounds
- Skipping deep referencing because the candidate interviewed well
- Leaving the offer and notice period to chance once a candidate says yes
How long does leadership hiring take?
With a clear brief and a responsive interview process, a typical leadership search with DHRS runs 2 to 3 weeks (passive job seekers) from brief to offer. The first assessed profiles usually arrive within 15 working days. Notice periods for senior leaders in India then commonly add 1 to 3 months before joining.

Leadership hiring is the process of finding and appointing senior leaders such as CEOs, CXOs, Business Heads and Functional Heads. It relies on market mapping, confidential outreach to passive candidates, in depth assessment and referencing.
How is leadership hiring different from regular recruitment?
Regular recruitment fills roles from active job seekers. Leadership hiring reaches sitting leaders who are not looking, assesses them in depth and presents a short list, while protecting confidentiality.
